Organic hay - a personal experience
Our mate Sharon has goats near Mackay, and she also grows hay.She sent us this photo and these were her comments..."Hi Liz,Guess which bale of hay is ours. It is 2kg heavier than the other bale and our animals leave no evidence behind!Seaperia Soluble seaweed has meant we got a great harvest after frost and are well on the way to another great crop. It is a pity that I can't include the smell in my email. It is the best smelling hay I have come across in quite a while :)Kind regardsSharon" ...

That is how nature works, that is how our planet and all its living ecosystems have evolved and that is the way it should be.But now in our human world change is happening so fast that our planet canât keep up. We just have to look at Australiaâs weather this ...

October 29, 2019Fruit trees + Seaperia = sweet success!
Over the years fruit in general has become virtually tasteless in comparison with what can be remembered in years gone by... not so long ago I was in the north of England at the site of an old farm in what was the apple orchard. There were just a few hardy, old, gnarled trees left and I wandered around the leafless autumn branches, above my reach just one large apple survived. I knocked it down, it was an old-fashioned Bramley and as I sank my teeth in its wonderful flavoursome juice ran down my...

The world is changing. Thatâs nothing new. What is new though is the rate of change now that information is so easily and quickly accessible, and so easy to share. How we grow food is changing, and so is what we want to buy. As consumers we are so much fussier than we used to be, because we have information at our fingertips about what we should be eating for better health, how to find the best produce and cook it so that it tastes amazing, as well as the impact our choices are having on other p...

In sheep this should produce a ...
August 3, 2019Are Kelp and Seaweed the same thing?
In Australia there is a tendency to call all seaweed âkelpâ. But are kelp and seaweed the same thing? Is kelp seaweed? What is kelp? How are Ascophyllum nodosum, kelp and seaweed similar? At Seaweed Enterprises Australia we only sell Ascophyllum nodosum, the king of seaweeds. In this article, Iâm going to explain to you the difference between kelp and Ascophyllum nodosum, and why we sell seaweed but donât sell kelp. Across the world, there are around 10,000 species of Sea...
August 2, 2019Seaweed and frost protection
Living in the Tropics it can be a bit of a challenge to get a photo of frost, but last year I did! I live at 1000 metres above sea level so frosts do happen in mid-winter. Frost is a challenge for all of us who are growing plants or feeding animals. In just a few hours it can destroy a year's work and hit hard in the hip pocket. Seaperia is proven to give plants an extra 2 to 4 degrees of frost tolerance! I know, this is an incredible fact and this winter it could save your crops, gardens and pa...
July 9, 2019Essential Elements
The periodic table is fascinating. To think that everything in our lives... E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G-! ... is made from combinations of just 118 different atoms â the elements. Five of them are so rare they have only been discovered in the last 20 years. No doubt there are many more yet to be found. We refer to many of them broadly as Trace Elements â they are needed only in trace amounts, and those trace amounts in the correct balance are essential to life and for optimal health of every living t...
April 17, 2019Carbon and Carbs
Understanding soil carbon as a component in the success of your farm is very important for every farmer worldwide... it is the Primary Unifying Factor in soil health, for the main component in soil carbon is organic matter - this is what gives soil its dark brown colour and rich earthy smell. Our grandfathers knew this - they would pick up a handful of their soil, squeeze it between their fingers, break it with their thumb, then smell it to find out if everything was OK... they knew instinctivel...
February 4, 2019Locusts - A Story of Biblical Proportions
Back in 1974 the West family made an epic journey, migrating from South Australia to Far North Queensland. There were 12 of us â 3 generations, 3 families, 3 trucks and caravans. My brother Ashley and family led the way in his Landrover, then Mum & Dad in a large International truck, and following Edna and I and kids in our International ex-Northern Territory Police paddywagon, all pulling large caravans and all packed to the hilt. From Adelaide our convoy made slow but steady prog...
December 31, 2018Legumes and natural Nitrogen
Legumes are a large family of plants that includes beans and peas as well as feed crops like alfalfa and clover. Grown all over the world as food for animals and humans (who doesn't love Baked Beans!), they play an important role because of their unique nitrogen-fixing ability. It is ironic that farmers spend so much money on Nitrogen fertilisers and yet we are surrounded by Nitrogen in the air we breathe. In fact our atmosphere is 78% Nitrogen. And it's the best type - it's free! Growing legumes...
October 30, 2018Potato Rot
The humble potato doesn't seem to have the resilience and lasting qualities it once had - in fact if not eaten quickly the average supermarket potato soon breaks down into a slimy, smelly mess. Not so many years ago potatoes were stored for months without the need for coldrooms - gradually losing moisture they would slowly shrivel and grow shoots in the sack. After months of storage they would be soft but still full of nutrition - the shoots were rubbed off and those potatoes were scrubbed or pee...
October 6, 2018Love your weeds!
Weeds are just like everything else in nature, they are there for a purpose. For example, weeds with large taproots bring up nutrients from deeper layers and can grow through and loosen compacted soil. We've all seen bare areas of poor soil that will hardly grow grass, and yet weeds such as fleabane are flourishing. These weeds are nature's front line, they are first to fight in the battle to get that soil back to health. These weeds should be slashed and mulched rather than sprayed and killed. T...
August 27, 2018The Drought
There is no doubt that in the past couple of weeks everyone in Australia has finally become aware of the severity of the drought we are facing, and how it is impacting farmers and communities in regional Australia. I have to tell you about a phone call to our dear friend Margaret. Margie and her husband are both in their 70's and manage a cattle station near Richmond. I'm sure you can imagine them - sun-hardened "salt of the earth" wonderful people. Margie is a very special person to us because ...
August 6, 2018Sugar isn't just for us sweet-tooths!
When it comes to sugar and farming I know the first thing we all think of is sugar cane. There are many of you reading this who are cane farmers, but sugar is important to every farmer. Plants use chlorophyll to trap the sun's energy and then use it to produce sugar via photosynthesis. This sugar energy is either used for growth, exuded through the roots to feed the microbiome or stored within the plant. Cattle and other animals will always favour pasture that is higher in sugars. We human anima...
July 22, 201810 reasons we say "Seaperia is The Superior Seaweed"
1. Seaperia is pure Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed. Ascophyllum nodosum is the most scientifically studied seaweed on the planet and is proven to give greatest results. Many other products contain inferior, cheaper varieties of seaweed. 2. Seaperia comes as granules and you simply add the water. You can mix your solution to suit your situation - stronger or weaker - and add whatever you want to the mix. 3. Seaperia is light because it has no water. Even large agricultural quantities are easy for yo...
July 22, 20189 amazing facts about Seaweed!
Here we go with 9 amazing facts and health benefits of seaweed that have nothing to do with trace elements or natural growth hormones...........(a bit unusual for us!)1. Seaweeds are not plants - is seaweed a plant? No, they are a type of algae. They have no roots, leaves or stems to transport water or nutrients. Instead, each cell derives what it needs directly from the seawater around it. The only similarity between seaweed and land plants is that both rely on sunlight to create energy through...
May 21, 2018Seaperia is THE KEY to changing your soil
Seaperia Seaweed is your key... the SHORTCUT you have been looking for to growing better, healthier, bigger crops on your land without waiting for the biology of your soil to improve... crazy you say, never been told this before. Please read on and I will explain as simply as I can. Over many years you have been told that you HAVE TO ADD FERTILISER TO YOUR SOIL to grow crops, and this was fair enough once upon a time, but haven't you spent enough money on all those chemical fertilizers year afte...
April 28, 2018Seaperia's amazing natural growth hormones
Ascophyllum nodosum, our Seaperia seaweed from Norway, is rich in substances often referred to as ânatural growth hormonesâ. These substances trigger and control particular development stages in plants, and the ways they work are incredibly interesting. Auxin is the reason that plants can react and adjust to external factors without having a nervous system. In living plants Auxin is needed at almost every stage of development to work with and regulate other hormones. Depending on t...
February 21, 2018Why Norway???
We are often asked what is so special about seaweed from Norway? What about Japanese seaweed or Australian seaweed? What about seaweed nori, nori sheets, and other edible seaweed types? The Australian Government doesnât allow harvesting of native seaweed underwater - in fact in 2012 the giant Bull Kelp forests in Tasmania were placed under protection. Australia does have a seaweed industry though, and a number of companies in Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia now have special licenses to ...
